It seems that the era of time and location relevant coupons and promotional discount offers is finally upon us, not from a company silicon valley company as one may expect but from the new world of Dubai. Dubai based white label social media company announced last week that it would be launching its Promos Engine as a white label application for publishers that would send coupons and e-discount vouchers based on user’s preferences and geographical location. That’s it then; soon we will be bombarded with advertising messages as we walk down our local town centre? Not according to interviews with some of the H2O management team. Word on the street is that they seem to have combined data correlation technologies (Vaile the founder of H2O is ex Smarts, Voyence & Riversoft – all correlation engines) to correlate between a users data, location and preferences – if that’s the case then little H2O may not be that little for much longer. According to industry insiders H2O has already signed with some major regional publishers in Europe, Australia, the USA, South Africa and Australia that will use the H2O Promos software as a revenue generator for publisher’s social media assets. Certainly this would bring a sigh of relief to companies in the publishing sector. Right now everyone knows the largest challenge faced by any publisher moving to digital is exactly how to make money with their own niche platforms and services. Banner advertising just doesn’t cut it, nor does Google Ad Words, it could be that H2O has delivered a timely and well thought out shot in the arm for traditional print publishers, many of which seem to be going to the wall in the face of the digital revolution. It is certainly an interesting company to keep an eye on, if of course they don’t get gobbled up by someone first.
